The Safe Routes to School Bike Voucher Program

At Salem-Keizer Safe Routes to School (SRTS), our mission is to decrease barriers to multimodal transportation and ensure every student has a safe, active way to get to school.

During the school year, we bring our Bicycle Safety Education fleet to campuses across the Salem-Keizer School District. For many students, this is their very first time learning to ride a bicycle.

To keep that momentum rolling after our 2 to 3-week unit concludes, we partner with school staff to identify students who would benefit most from their own bike.

Since 2024, this program has successfully equipped 9 students with bicycles and the safety gear they need to ride to school confidently.

Powered By Community Partnerships

This program is entirely community-funded and relies on powerful local partnerships to bridge the gap between education and access:

  • The Northwest Hub: This local bicycle shop generously opens their shop to our students and their families. They offer their expertise and a wide inventory of refurbished bikes to ensure every student finds the perfect fit.

  • Salem Bicycle Club: This local cycling club covers the entire purchase. This is made possible through funds raised during their annual “Monster Cookie Metric Century” bike ride. They donate annually as a way to give back to their community.

If your child received a voucher from their school, congratulations! This voucher is a celebration of their hard work and successful completion of the Bicycle Safety Education program.

Here is how to redeem it:

  • Where to go: Physically present your voucher to The Northwest Hub located at 1230 Broadway St NE. Salem, Oregon 97301.

  • What is included: Your student will get to choose one refurbished bicycle, a helmet, a light, and a lock—completely free of charge.

  • Help with transportation: If you do not have a way to get your bike home, Salem-Keizer Safe Routes to School can coordinate delivery to your school.
